About Us

The CHIJ Katong Convent Concert Band is the newest Co-Curricular Activity in the school. Formed at the beginning of 2010, the band now has a total of 50 student musicians under the baton of Mr. Sim Kim Seng and Mr Ong Yeow Tong.

Despite its short history, the concert band has made outstanding achievements in the local schools' arts scene. The band was awarded Gold Awards at the Singapore International Band Festival (SIBF) and at the National Band Competition consecutively in 2012, 2014 and 2016. On their first overseas trip to the Hong Kong Winter Band Festival 2012, they were memorably bestowed the Gold Award. At the 2013, 2015 and 2017 Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation, the band attained Certificates of Distinction. In addition, its clarinet ensemble won the First Prize at the 2015 Singapore Clarinet Festival Ensemble Competition.

Throughout the year, all members attend numerous concerts performed by various ensembles, such as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and West Winds. In addition to their exposure to excellent musical works, every member is trained to take the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music practical examinations to develop their skills and talents.

Since its inception, the concert band has performed in many concerts and recitals. In 2014, the band was invited to perform at the SIBF Winner Bands Presentation at the Esplanade Concert Hall. The band was again invited to perform at the newly refurbished Victoria Concert Hall in November 2014 and 2016.

The concert band has taken part in exchange programmes with ensembles such as the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Macau Youth Symphonic Band. The band has also worked with renowned conductors and composers such as Yo Goto, Toro Miura, Frank Tryoka and Richard Saucedo.

In 2015 and 2017, the band was invited by the Esplanade to perform full-length concerts, Limelight at the Esplanade Concert Hall.
